Getting Ready for the M1 Knowledge Test: What to Expect

If you’re 16 or older and dreaming of hitting the road on two wheels, your first step is passing the M1 Knowledge Test—the gateway to motorcycle freedom in Ontario.

The M1 test is a written exam that checks your knowledge of road rules, traffic signs, and motorcycle safety. It’s based on the Official MTO Motorcycle Handbook, so studying that guide is key to passing on your first try.

What’s on the M1 Test?

The M1 Knowledge Test includes:

  • Multiple-choice questions
  • Topics like safe riding habits, lane positioning, hazard awareness, and how to handle tough weather or road conditions
  • Basic traffic laws and sign recognition

You’ll also need to pass a vision test when you go in.

Where Do You Take It?

Head to a DriveTest Centre. No appointment is needed—just bring:

  • Valid ID (proof of age and residency)
  • The test fee is $16.00 in Ontario

The test is done on a computer and available in multiple languages.

What Happens Next?

Pass the test, and you’ll walk away with your M1 licence, valid for 90 days. This comes with a few restrictions (like no night riding or highways), but it’s your official start as a motorcyclist.
