The first priority should be to try to brake and stop before reaching the animal. If that is not possible, try manoeuvring around it. Be certain to adjust speed before taking evasive action.

Downshifting while reducing speed prevents sudden jerking of the motorcycle. In addition to downshifting, applying both sets of brakes to reduce speed or come to a stop is important because brake lights help motorists behind the motorcycle realize that a change in speed is occurring.

Tires are just one of the controls that must be inspected regularly to ensure safety when driving a motorcycle. It is important to inspect these parts because motorcyclists are at greater risk if breakdown occurs.

A license plate and a vehicle permit are required to register a motorcycle. The vehicle permit contains an exact description of the motorcycle; any change to the appearance of the motorcycle must be registered.

Maintain control over the motorcycle by using the knees to grip the gas tank firmly. Hold onto the handlebars properly so that if the motorcycle bounces you will not lose control over it.

Full-faced helmets offer the best protection. A wide variety of sizes and styles are available for full-faced helmets. It is advisable to pick helmets with bright colours and reflective strips or patches.

The M licensing process is graduated, much like the G licence. It begins with a written test for the M1. The M1 exit test to get an M2 may be attempted after 60 days, and must be successfully completed before the 90-day expiration date or a new M1 licence must be obtained (M1 tests may be attempted before 60 days when they are offered as part of a Ministry-approved safety course). Application for the M licence is not permitted earlier than 20 months after obtaining an M2 licence provided a safety course is taken, hence a total of 22 months. If a safety course is not taken, a waiting period of 24 months is required.
